Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani is a Qatari statesman who served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, having assumed power from his father in a bloodless palace coup. During his reign he oversaw significant economic and social modernization, including the development of Qatar's natural gas industry and the founding of the Al Jazeera media network. In 2013 he abdicated in favor of his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and now holds the title of Father Amir.
